Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization

What is THD?

Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization

Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization, or THD, is a new method of treating hemorrhoids (piles).

It does not involve actual piles surgery and is therefore less painful with faster recovery and return to normal activities.

How Safe And Effective Is Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization?

Is It Suitable For All Types Of Hemorrhoids?

No. Currently it is recommended for large second degree or small third degree hemorrhoids. Large hemorrhoids with significant amount of prolapse will still require more thorough kind of treatment like stapled hemorrhoidectomy.

Each patient is individually assessed carefully and the most appropriate and effective kind of therapy recommended.

How is THD done?

Transanal Hemorrhoidal Dearterialization is done under sedation. Once the patient is comfortably sedated, a special Doppler ultrasound probe is inserted into the anus to locate the hemorrhoidal blood vessels.

Once located, the vessel is stitched, thereby shutting off the blood supply to the hemorrhoids. After the blood supply is cut off, the hemorrhoid will shrink with time and stop bleeding.

Does It Require Admission Into Hospital?

No. It is a day surgery procedure. Patients can expect to be discharged 1-2 hours after waking up from sedation.

Do The Stitches Need To Be Removed?

No. The stitches used are the absorbable type; meaning they will disappear on their own after a few weeks.
